GHC is currently seeking a new provider for its 2013 food services.
According to Renva Watterson, GHC’s interim president, Allmora and its parent company Old Fashion Foods Inc., who currently provide catering and vending services, have opted out of renewing their contracts with GHC.
According to Rob Whitaker, vice president of finance and administration, the company took a great risk due to “lack of guaranteed revenue” when it started providing catering and vending services in the 2011 fall semester. Allmora has suffered an estimated $30,000 loss on its operations at GHC. Due to legal conditions, Allmora could not comment on the subject.
Whitaker says the college is looking into ways the in which it can provide food and vending services in the future. Whitaker also notes the possibility of students working for the café in the spring semester. It is unclear if this would be a work study opportunity, or open to any student.
According to the Floyd County Public Health Inspection website, on Oct. 2, the Floyd campus’ Charger Café failed it’s first inspection of the year with a score of 64. Due to this unsatisfactory score, another inspection took place on Oct. 17, this time resulting in a redeeming score of 93.

As someone with over 6 years experience in Food Services, I would like to say the Allmora Group here on the Cartersville campus has done an excellent job! The food never has tasted “school cafeteria” style. Suzanne (?) and her crew can take any dish and make it taste homemade. I had wondered how they could provide such good food at such a low price. Now I see they couldn’t…
I am really going to miss the convenience of having a home-cooked meal so readily available. I am also going to miss the friendly faces. Food service is more than providing food. It is providing an atmosphere that you are welcomed and appreciated. The Cartersville group filled that need.
While I’m sorry to hear about the change in staff, hopefully we can provide better for students who are on campus a bit later. Closing at 3:00 is stupid. There’s hardly anyone here at 7 a.m. Why not open from 8-4 or 9-5? There’s more money to be made from those who have a break between 3:15 and 5:00.
